The problem with the parks in this city, also pointed out in this survey, is the size.With some exceptions, parks in Washington are little. In summer, with hot and humid weather, everybody goes outdoors, and there is no room in the parks. On the next corner from here, there is a little "green triangle", Samuel Gompers Memorial Park.
In this case, access is the problem. The park is at a crossroads of three streets and one avenue, close to an elementary school. In rush hour it takes a lot of time to reach it.
But of course Washington also has amazing parks like the Mall. My favorite place for running, it offers a unique view. To the East, the Capitol. To the West, the Washington Monument, the highest construction in town. It is impossible not to check the sky, looking for an alien ship ready to attack or demand an audience with Obama.
Some parks, in the commercial center of Washington, show other aspects of this city. Franklin Park, on K Street, is crowded with people lunching, resting and texting during the day.
But as dusk comes, an army of homeless converge to the park. Charity institutions know that and transformed Franklin Park into a point for clothes and food distribution. Most of the homeless are black, but there are people of all ethnic groups. The situation is more critical since the financial crisis. The collapse started with the real estate market and many lost their houses in this country. Even during the day, there are people in the park, with all their belongings in little suitcases.
For those who like animals, it is certain you will find squirrels anywhere in Washington. They are as common here as rats are in Sao Paulo. This is not an advantage: with the exception of the tails, both animals are pretty similar.
